Pabitra Mohan De (1924–1993) was a philanthropist, humanitarian and devotional poet who wrote more than 500 lyrics in Bengali and English, grounded in devotional philosophy. He originated a form of Kirtan drawn from the Geeta, the Vedas and the Puranas, and composed musical dramas built around the Ramayana. He avoided the spotlight throughout his life, uninterested in fame or money, and passed away in 1993 — leaving behind a body of work that scholars of Bengali literature, Sanskrit and devotional studies later recognised as worth preserving for the country’s devotional canon.
His songs are now referred to by researchers and singers as Pabitra Geeti — a distinct stream of devotional music drawing on the ragas of Indian classical music alongside Baul, Bhatiyali and the folk traditions of Bengal.
The Trust works to revive traditional and Vedic knowledge that is too often dismissed as myth, and to renew the public’s ethical and ecological relationship with nature — through practices that also support mental wellbeing.
Social work runs alongside the Trust’s cultural mission — reaching students, orphaned and differently-abled children, and street dwellers across Kolkata and its adjoining areas.
We truly believe that by working together, we can create more smiles because every smile matters.
